Navarathiri & Its Definition...

|

What's the Significance of Navratri?

During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life. She is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything. Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.

Why Worship the Mother Goddess?

We think this energy is only a form of the Divine Mother, who is the mother of all, and all of us are her children. "Why mother; why not father?", you may ask. Let me just say that we believe that God's glory, his cosmic energy, his greatness and supremacy can best be depicted as the motherhood aspect of God. Just as a child finds all these qualities in his or her mother, similarly, all of us look upon God as mother. In fact, Hinduism is the only religion in the world, which gives so much importance to the mother aspect of God because we believe that mother is the creative aspect of the absolute.

Why Twice a Year?

Every year the beginning of summer and the beginning of winter are two very important junctures of climatic change and solar influence. These two junctions have been chosen as the sacred opportunities for the worship of the divine power because:

(1) We believe that it is the divine power that provides energy for the earth to move around the sun, causing the changes in the outer nature and that this divine power must be thanked for maintaining the correct balance of the universe.

(2) Due to the changes in the nature, the bodies and minds of people undergo a considerable change, and hence, we worship the divine power to bestow upon all of us enough potent powers to maintain our physical and mental balance.

Why Nine Nights & Days?

Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

Why Do You Need the Power?

Thus, I suggest you join your parents in worshipping "Ma Durga" during the Navaratri. She will bestow on you wealth, auspiciousness, prosperity, knowledge, and other potent powers to cross every hurdle of life. Remember, everyone in this world worships power, i.e., Durga, because there is no one who does not love and long for power in some form or the other.

What Is Done Everyday?

1st - 3rd day of Navratri

On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room and barley seeds are sown on it. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy.

 4th - 6th day of Navratri

During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped.

 7th - 8th day of Navratri

These final days belong to Saraswati Maa who is worshipped to acquire the spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. But on the 8th day of this colourful festival, yagna (holy fire) is performed.

 Mahanavami

The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped.

Futsal Fever Came To A Dramatic End..!!!

|
MACHANZ TRIUMPH!!!

Machanz emerged champions after defeating XLR8 1-0 in a match that could have ended either way. The match began with both teams playing equally well and having many chances at goal, which required both the goalkeepers to perform many wonderful saves.

Taha of XLR8 played consistently throughout the whole match in every possible corner of the court. XLR8 opted to start the game without their regular players, Mazly and Tompoq. XLR8 managed to gain the lion’s share of the attacking opportunities in the first half; however they could not find a way to get past the Best Keeper of the Tournament, Viki.

The second half started off as how the first half ended, with the teams playing equally well, however mid way through the second half, Man of The Match, Lingesh, managed to dribble past the XLR8 defense and set-up the Most Valuable Player, Raj, to score the match deciding goal. The Machanz defense, consisting of Navin and Ashvind, was stubborn not to concede any goals, so that they will be able to boast that they have the best defense of the tournament with only 1 goal conceded.

After the final whistle was blown, relief can be seen in the Machanz player’s faces as they managed to bring back the Trophy for the second time in their history. Machanz also walked away with the RM100 cash prize.

BOFC GETS BRONZE!!!!

A silky Jorden double and deciding goal from Sumit was what that was needed by BOFC to secure third place, in what proved to be a hard fought match.
Both teams went into the match sporting injures from the previous round; Fir of BOFC and Samuel from Jack Daniels were unable to help their teams tonight. The match was swinging both ways, with both teams displaying attacking futsal. Even though Jack Daniels equalized twice, it was not enough to beat the relentless BOFC.
Both the goalkeepers were kept on their toes throughout the match, with shots coming from all over the court. The match was all set to enter extra time, when Sumit managed to clinch the decisive goal in the dying seconds.
This is the second time in the tournament that glory has been taken away from Jack Daniels in the dying seconds; the first time was when they lost to XLR8 in the semi-finals.

5-STAR KISSING BANDITS MADE IT 5 OUT OF 5!!!

Kissing Bandits has been winning the girls category since the introduction of the Futsal Tournament 4 semesters ago. The Kissing Bandits goalkeeper was rarely tested throughout the match however the same cannot be said of the City Girls goalkeeper, Tulika, who was under pressure throughout the game, in what ended up being a 4-0 drubbing of City Girls.
Consistent scorer Prexa, managed to add 2 more goals to her tally, and got a deserved Woman of the match award. The crowd favorite, and Valuable Player, Ester, managed to score a goal and pressured Nisha into kicking the ball into her own net.
City Girls managed to improve their track record in the tournament by going one up on their previous achievement of third placing in the last tournament, Kissing Bandits are now proving to be an unbeatable force in the Women’s category.

DAY 1 UPDATES

The season opener Group A match was between last season finalist Machanz and newcomer Johnny Walker with Machanz cruising to a 4-0 win. However, Machanz once winner of this cup struggled to score till Navin scored the opener for Machanz. Machanz dominated the game and pushed hard for the next goal when Trish lobbed from defence which was delivered by Raj smartly to score the second goal. Trish, making a comeback from injury after for almost a year scored the third goal from a corner kick assisted by Lingesh. Lingesh , twice MVP winner managed to get into the score sheet when he did a excellent one two play with Raj to blast home the final goal. Viki managed to keep the clean sheet after producing several saves throughout the match.Jack Daniel previously known as Nameless FCUK scored through a brilliant hatrick from Nadun and a double from Mmediong to demolish Engineering 1st Year 5 – 1. The game seemed to be one sided match as jack Daniel pushing for more goals as Engineering 1st Year only goal came through Bryan from the mid-line.

As in Group B match, Putranz lost one nil shockingly to Poom Poom who played all their heart to win the match through a goal from Kelvin. Putranz lost their concentration after the first goal conceded and Poom Poom took full advantage to frustrate Putranz by defending hard. Last season semifinalist Revenge of Sith won comfortablely after defeating Avinash FC two nil with goals from Syaha and Ringo.

In Group C, Defending Champions BOFC made a flying start to the tournament after a tremendous hatrick by Sumit to stir them to a 3-1 victory over Legend Killers. Marko frustrated the defending Champions by producing several saves but that couldn’t last long when BOFC got their momentum. Newcomers Wonderboys made a wonderful start to beat another newcomer Good For Nothing one nil with both the teams playing equally well.

However in Group D, team to watch XLR8 came down from a goal down to beat former champions Falcons 3-1. Falcons who are without three regular players finding it hard to get through XLR8 as Ahmed from Falcons could be spotted in every corner in the court also failed to find the net. The final match of the day was OMMLF against Student Council with Student Council going down 4-1 after taking a shock lead through Jojo. The Student Council began to feel fatigue in the second half and OMMLF took advantage by scoring four goals through Zailani,Ope and a double from Michael.

As for the Girls category, four times winner Kissing Bandits thrashed CiTY Girls 4-1 with Prexa notching a hatrick before Kedung adding the final one. Nisha scored the consolation goal for CiTY Girls but Kissing Bandits looked too strong to lose this match. Kissing Bandits second match was more unstoppable when they thrashed Shushbugs five nil with goals from Pratima(2),Esther, Kedung and an own goal by Ayesha. Kissing Bandits spotted with a newcomer, Esther, who played very silky and seemed to had entertain the crowd with her brilliant dribbling skills. However, CiTY Girls second match was even better when they beat last season runners-up Upperground one nil with a goal from Nisha.Tulika, goalkeeper for CiTY Girls made several excellent stops to prevent any Tim and Bertha from scoring. The only draw match of the day was from the Sushbugs vs Upperground with both the teams failing to break the deadlock.

DAY 2 UPDATES

In Group A match today, Machanz cruised into quarterfinals after a hard fought victory against Jack Daniels 2-1. In the first half, both teams were playing equally hard where Machanz and Jack Daniels hitting the bar and post several times. However,Machanz broke the deadlock in the early second half when Feggiro failed to clear the ball which enabled Navin to score the opener. Machanz defence stayed tight with good performance by Agilan who frustrated Nadun throughout the match. Raj scored the second goal for Machanz to seal the victory as Nadun scoring the consolation goal for Jack Daniels to take his tally to 4 goals in the tournament. In the other match of Group A, Johnny Walker easily beat Engineering 1st year three nil with a superb double from Puneeth and Kimu. Mathematically, Johnny Walker still have a great chance to qualify to the quarterfinals tomorrow as they face Jack Daniel to wrap off the final group match.

In Goup B, Sith beat Poom Poom one nil by a goal from Ringo. Although Poom Poom pushed hard but they were still unable to penetrate Sith’s defence who currently have the best defence in the tournament. Afiq from Sith made few excellent stops to keep the clean sheet. However, Venkat from Poom Poom collected the first yellow card of the tournament. In the other Group B fixture, Putranz beat Avinash FC 2-1 after coming one nil down in a hot tempered match. Two goal hero Barath stirred Putranz for their first win of the tournament. The match got heated up when Koshin of Putrans fouled Neilson of Avinash FC which prompted the match to stop for several minutes. Neilson lost his cool and side kicked Koshin later which lead to his sent off.

In Group C, defending Champions BOFC beat Good For Nothing five nil to book the quarterfinal berth. BOFC seemed troubled to find the opener before Peechee gave a beautiful shot somewhere from the middle line to make it one nil. Yesterday’s hatrick hero Sumit failed to notch another hatrick today but made a double to keep BOFC at the top of the group. Jorden managed to make into the score sheet with a double after producing some exciting dribbling skills yesterday. In the other match, Legend Killers made sure that their quarterfinals dream not over when they thrashed Wonderboys 4-0 with a Avinash double. Mamat and Celestine scored the other goals for Legend Killers to wrap up the match. Marko of Legend Killers rarely been tested but managed to produced a clean sheet.

In Group D, team to watch XLR8 demolished Student Council 7-1 to knock out them from the quarterfinals berth. Mazley from XLR8 had his treble with few powerful shots as Berty, Steve and Taha also made into the score sheets. The Student Council President, Ranoulph, made sure they had another consolation goal today with a powerful shot against XLR8 although that wouldn’t be enough time to make a comeback. The other match between Falcons and OMMLF ended dramatically with a 4-3 win to Falcons. It was a tight match as both the teams had to force the goalkeepers to be busy. Ahmed’s double and an each from Juma and Ishaq put Falcons 4-2 in the lead. Landy’s double and a goal from Zailani wasn’t enough for OMMLF to gain a draw.

In the Women’s Category, Kissing Bandits thrashed SUpperground 4-0 in their first match of the evening with Prexa scoring the first quadruple of the tournament. Upperground hardly made any trouble for Kissing Bandits as Regina, Kissing Bandits goalkeeper hardly been tested. Free scoring Prexa had her treble again when Kissing Bandits thrashed Shushbugs 4-0 in the other atch of the evening. Arguablely the ` Messi’ of Curtin, Esther, didn’t fail to score the other goal for Kissing Bandits.

Shushbugs other match was even much better when they came down from a goal down to salvage a 1-1 draw. CiTY Girls were lucky enough to score the first goal when Shushbugs goalkeeper pushed the ball into her own net. This match was equally tough for the both sides although Shushbug tried to find another goal which was several times denied by Tulika of CiTY Girls. CiTY Girls beat Upperground in their second match 1-0 with a splendid long range shot from Simitha. Tim of Upperground was in every corner of the court but still failed to save them from the defeat. With Kissing Bandits already booked the final berth, CiTY Girls will only need a draw to qualify for the final match tomorrow.

DAY 3 UPDATES

In Group A, Machanz thrashed Engineering 1st Year 8-0 without a mercy to condemn them to the bottom of the table. Raj scored seven goals which are currently the highest goals scored by a player for per match in the tournament. Six out of seven goals scored by Raj were assisted by hard worker Lingesh . The other Raj’s goal was assisted by Trish who later managed to get into the score sheet as well. However, Jack Daniels booked the other quarterfinal berth when Nadun scored the only goal in the match to beat Johnny Walker one nil. As expected, this match was a well heated match as both the teams were still in chase for the next stages.

In Group B, last season semifinalist Revenge Of Sith lost shockingly to underdogs Putranz two nil with a brilliant brace from Barath. Sith was expected to go through the quarterfinals after clinching two victories in first two matches and needed only a draw to advance. However, the never giving up Putranz showed that anything can happen in sports after stubbornly pushing hard on Sith. Sith was without their top scorer Ringo for this respective match. In the other match, Poom Poom grabbed the top spot after thrashing Avinash FC 6-2 with a superb treble by Kelvin. Kevin seemed looking at his best yesterday scored a double before Venkat getting another one. Avinash FC scored through Zaki and Basil although that wouldn’t be enough to save them from the defeat.

In Group C, defending champions BOFC made it three out of three to demolish Wonderboys eight nil with Sumit scoring a quadruple. Free blasting Sumit looks unstoppable and will be a threat to defenders who will meet him in the quarterfinals. Peechee, Jorden, Firdous and Danny scored the other goals for BOFC. Legend Killers created history when for the first time they reach the last eight after beating Good For Nothing 3-1 with a brace from Mamat and a goal by Avinash. Good For Nothing only goal came from Hee Kah Ming.

In Group D, team to watch XLR8 easily beat OMMLF with a intelligent Taha double with Steve scoring the opener. OMMLF were trying hard in the whole match but they seemed lack of experience in playing futsal although they still managed to pose several dangerous threats. In the other match, Falcons last season bronze finalist made sure that they still have more business to do in the next stage thrashed Student Council 6-1. Juma claimed a hatrick while Ishaq, Abdi and an own goal by Jojo adding the other goals. Student Council again made sure that they will not leave the court without finding a consolation goal with a brilliantly taken mid line goal by Ranoulph.

In the women’s category, defending champions Kissing Bandits showed what they are best at by beating Upperground and CiTY Girls respectively. They defeated Upperground three nil in the first match with goals from Kedung, Esther, and Prexa. In their second match against CiTY Girls, arguablely the `Curtin Messi’ Esther notched a hatrick with some additional tricky display on court. Kedung, once a winner of MVP managed to get another hatrick in the one sided match. However, Abby of CiTY Girls finally ended her goal drought scored one goal in the 1-1 draw against Shushbugs. Abby spotted being frustrated unable to break the deadlock in the previous matches, seemed happy to reign her goal scoring touch. Last season finalist Upperground, made sure they left the tournament with a two nil win against Shushbugs with goals from Bertha and Tim.

Quarter Finals Updates

The first quarterfinals of the day began with Machanz cruising to the semifinals after thrashing Putranz six nil. Machanz maintained their reputation as the only team to have had qualified to at least semifinals from season one. Putranz whom showed that they are capable of making upset after beating Sith in the final group stage match, didn’t had much attacks on goal as they played more defensively. At the same stage last season, Machanz beat Putranz 3-1, but this time there was no mercy shown against the arch-rivals. Kevin, the Putranz goalie did several nail biting stops, but Machanz looked too strong as a quadruple from Raj and one each from Lingesh and Navin settled the score.

In the second quarterfinal match, Jack Daniels beat Poom Poom 2-1 in a hair rising match that went into extra time. Poom Poom took the lead through a clever goal by Kelvin. However that wasn’t enough as Jack Daniels got back their fighting spirits and pulled one back through Nadun. The score was kept leveled till full time due to good performances from both the goalkeepers. Just after extra time began, Mmediong scored the winning goal for Jack Daniels. However, towards the end of the second half of the extra time, Venkat was fouled somewhere near the penalty area. Sujen nearly scored through a deflected free kick but was well saved by Ope of Jack Daniels.

The third quarterfinals match was between defending Champions BOFC and last season bronze medalist Falcons ended with BOFC winning 3-1. Sumit, Firdaus, and Danny scored the goals for BOFC while the only consolation goal from Falcons came through Ishaq. Falcons were kept well alive in the game due to the determination of their goalkeeper Mohammed. However, a clean sheet for Mohammed was not possible due to a constant threat from BOFC. BOFC players, Jorden, Danny and Firdaus were spotted with injuries after the match.

The fourth quarterfinal match, XLR8 beat Legend Killers 4-1 after a grueling match that ended in extra time. Legend Killers shockingly took the lead through a Berty’s own goal. Legend Killers seemed stubborn to concede a goal until Taha opened the scoring account for XLR8. Taha managed his double in extra time before Berty and Steve sealed off what was a well fought victory. Marko had produced several amazing saves to keep the score leveled till the end of regulation time. Mazly of XLR8 who scored numerous goals in previous stage, didn’t managed to get into the score sheet as the Legend Killers defenders were marking him tightly throughout the whole match.

Semi Finals Updates

Machanz cruised into their 3rd final in a row after defeating the defending champions BOFC, 2-0 in a match that was a repeat of last season’s final. The organizers did not expect such a big crowd the semi- finals, however the crowd managed to overwhelm the match with their unrelenting support. The match produced many saves from the goalkeepers from both end of the pitch. It was sweet revenge for Machanz as they managed to beat BOFC for the first time in the tournament’s history. The first half ended goalless as both sides had equal opportunities to take the lead. The deadlock was finally broken in the second half after Raj managed to score a poacher’s goal. After a long throw from Vicky, the Machanz goalkeeper, the BOFC keeper let the ball slip into his own net after constant pressure from Raj. After scoring the 2nd goal, Machanz were dominating the rest of the game. Several players were spotted injured after the match, Jorden (Groin), Fir (Knee), Danny (Toe) Ashvind (Knee) and Trish (Ankle). Machanz are now heading into the final feeling boosted by having the best defense in the tournament so far.

The crowd favorites, XLR8 stormed into the final after coming back from one goal down to beat Jack Daniels, 2-1 in an ill tempered match. The scoring began when Mmediong from Jack Daniels managed to break through the XLR8 defense due to a miss kick from Berti. However after the introduction of Taha, XLR8 managed to push forward more and pressure the Jack Daniels goalkeeper, Ope to make many well timed saves. However this did not change the fact that Mmediong was a constant threat to the XLR8 defense throughout the 1st half. In the 2nd half, Tompoq managed to equalize through a brilliant goal just after the half line. This goal managed to bring back what was left of XLR8’s fighting spirit. XLR8 then started to dominate the game; Jack Daniels then had their dream shattered after Hasnat’s long throw managed to find Taha, who then headed the ball into the net to claim the winning goal. Tomorrow’s final is now expected to be very entertaining as today’s semi-final proved very closely fought.

Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Varalakshmi Vrata day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength

The importance of Varalakshmi Puja is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. It is believed that importance of Varalakshmi Puja was narrated to Goddess Parvati by Lord Shiva.

CiTY OFFICIAL BANNER

|

Hello everyone...

It has been a great long holidays...At the same time, CiTY CLUB's is continously working hard to drive the club forward in the eyes of Curtinians as well as the public in Miri. Their latest effort was to produce an official banner for the club which they managed to complete the task perfectly. The design for the banner was done by the Head of Publicity - Mr.Vignes Shanmuganathan & Ms.Nishara Sayer. CiTY CLUB on behalf of the board members would like to thank and congratulate them for their valuable yet important contribution towards the club.

This was the prefered design and was selected to be the official club banner...

Lastly, CiTY CLUB would like to take this opportunity to wish the Chinese community through out the globe a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year. May the year of Bull brings a better luck for all of us...Till then...Adios... :)
